Travel Connections to Bay Area Cities

The UCSC Fremont BART Connector may be gone (service ended June 2010) but it is still possible to travel to Bay Area cities using the Highway 17 Express combined with other public transit. Zipcar or Enterprise rental cars, or ridesharing through Zimride will also get you there. The information listed here will help you choose a transportation option that works best for you.

Highway 17 Express - From Santa Cruz Metro's Pacific station in downtown Santa Cruz take the Highway 17 Express bus to the San Jose Diridon train station. Cost: $5 one-way. Get the Highway 17 Express schedule.

To Get To East Bay Cities

For East Bay cities including Fremont, Hayward, Oakland, Emeryville, Berkeley, Richmond and Martinez transfer from the Highway 17 Express to a Capitol Corridor train when you arrive at the San Jose Diridon station, or

Transfer to VTA Route 180 (Sat/Sun)/181(weekday) buses to get to Fremont BART station.
Cost: $4 one-way. At the Fremont BART station trains are available to all other BART stations (changing trains may be necessary to get to some destinations). Cost: $1.75-$7, depending on destination. Link to BART Fare Calculator.

To Get To Peninsula Cities and San Francisco

At the San Jose Diridon station take a Northbound Line/San Francisco Caltrain to get to any of these peninsula cities: Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Atherton, Redwood City, San Carlos, Belmont, Hillsdale, San Mateo, Burlingame, Millbrae, San Bruno, South San Francisco and San Francisco. Greyhound - 2 trips per day from the Santa Cruz to San Jose-Hayward-Oakland-San Francisco, 1 trip per day to San Jose-Oakland-San Francisco. Buses depart from the Greyhound station located at 425 Front St. (next to Santa Cruz Metro's Pacific station). Schedule is subject to change; contact the service provider for current schedule. Cost: $15 to Hayward, Oakland, and San Francisco.

Zipcar - A membership-based car share program that allows students 18 and over to rent cars on campus on an hourly or daily basis. Use fees start at $7 per hour and include all vehicle fees, gas, insurance, mileage and reserved parking on campus. Members have access 24 hours per day to 15 vehicles – nine on campus and six in downtown Santa Cruz. For detailed information, visit www.zipcar.com/ucsc/.

Zimride - A social networking ridematching program exclusive to the UCSC community. You can find someone to share your recurring or one-time trip through Zimride, even if you don’t have a car – just post the ride you need. You can even share your Zipcar trip with others and save on costs. For detailed information, visit zimride.ucsc.edu.

Enterprise Rent-a-Car - Rents to students 18 years and older and offers daily and partial day rates. 18-20 years old, reference account #UCSC18; over 21 reference account #UCSC21. PIN #UCS. You must call the local Santa Cruz Enterprise office at 831-426-7799 to be eligible for this program; not available through Enterprise online reservation system.
