Move In 2013 Parking and Transporation Information
Before You Arrive
If you’re a student moving onto campus you will receive instructions from your college or your housing unit regarding move in times.
You will be instructed to look for signs marked "WEST" for West colleges posted at Bay and Meder Street and the Campus Entrance, or "EAST" for East Colleges posted at Coolidge and Hagar directing you to specific College Move In staging areas. After checking in at a Move In staging area follow college specific signs to your designated unloading parking lot.
"No Pet" Policy
UCSC has a "no pet" policy that is strictly enforced. (Animals utilized for disability accommodation as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act are permitted.) If you enter UCSC with a pet (non-service animal) you will be asked to remove your pet from campus. There are several "pet hotels" in Santa Cruz County equipped to board your pet. Check local listings.
Move In Schedule Map
A Move In Schedule Map showing the check-in points for each housing area is available for downloading. Performing Arts Lot 126, Barn Theater Lot 122, Granary Lot 118, and lower campus lots may be used for overflow parking for all Move In activity.
Traffic Patterns and Road Closures - What To Expect
Campus traffic will be redirected to help students move in.
Hagar Drive will be closed to downhill traffic at the intersection at the Bay Tree Bookstore from 7am-6pm on Friday, September 20th through Saturday, September 21st, and from 7am-3pm on Sunday, September 22nd. Vehicles will be directed down Coolidge Drive and may return to the Bay Tree Bookstore and East Remote by turning right up Hagar. A campus police officer will be stationed at the intersection of Hagar and McLaughlin to allow access for emergency vehicles, Metro buses and TAPS shuttles.
The service road between Porter College and Kresge College will be restricted to one-way traffic on Wednesday, September 18th, Friday, September 20th, and Saturday, September 21st. From 7am-6pm traffic will flow from Kresge to Porter. No entrance will be available from Porter Road at Heller Drive.
The Bay Tree Bookstore Vendor Fair will take place at the Quarry Plaza from 9am-5pm Friday, September 20th through Monday, September 23rd. Parking will be reserved for the vendors in the Hahn Lot 101.
Traffic patterns will return to normal for Sunday’s move-in.
When you arrive to the college move in staging area you will need to check in with the residential staff. There may be a waiting period before you are released from the staging area to move into the residence halls or apartments.
Move In Unloading Pass
All Colleges issue a "Move In Unloading Pass" to serve as both a temporary pass to allow you to unload vehicles near residence halls and a remote parking permit for your assigned move in day only. This "Move In Unloading Pass" is valid in parking lots posted "Move In" only. These passes will not be valid on Monday, September 23rd.
One hour free parking will be available for people needing to access the Hahn Student Services building and Bookstore from Wednesday, September 18th through Tuesday, September 24th. Proceed to the lower Hahn Lot 101 (map of location).
From Wednesday, September 18th through Friday, October 4th (7am- 5pm) half hour free parking will be available in Campus Facilities Lot 116 (map of location) for those who need to conduct business at the TAPS Parking Sales Office.
STARS Move In and Workshops
Transfer Student Move In will be Wednesday, September 18th. STARS students moving onto campus or to University Town Center should go to their college housing office to pick up their keys and "Move In Unloading Pass". This pass will enable the student to park close to their place of residence and unload their possessions. After unloading they will be directed to park in remote lots.
STARS Orientation will take place at Kresge Town Hall on Thursday, September 19th from 8:30am-4:30pm, and at Media Theater on Friday, September 20th from 8:30am-2:30pm. On Thursday TAPS event attendants will sell permits and direct parking in the Core West Parking Structure Lot 112 from 8:30am-4:30pm, and on Friday from 8-9:30am in Performing Arts Parking Lot 126.
Temporary Parking Permits
All students, family and friends who plan to have a car on campus before or beyond your move-in date may purchase a temporary parking permit at the the TAPS Sales Office. Students who normally are not eligible for parking permits will be able to purchase a parking permit for a one-week period following move in, for September 23rd through September 27th, for remote lots only. This permit is unnecessary for students who have a valid permit for the quarter or the academic year.
Remember - All residential first and second-year students must remove their vehicles from campus by Sunday, September 29, 2013 unless a parking exception by appeal has been granted. Temporary permits will not be issued (beyond 9/27/13) to students with appeals pending.
Parking Permits for the Quarter and Academic Year
Commuting students, and residential students with 90 units, who want to purchase a parking permit for the quarter or the academic year should submit a parking permit application online at https://basweb.ucsc.edu/application2013/.
There is no parking grace period; all vehicles must display a valid parking permit when parked at UCSC. Parking enforcement hours are from 7am to 8:30pm Monday through Friday in most campus parking lots. Some parking lots require parking permits 24/7; check permit requirement signs at parking lot entrances.
Move In Transit Service
On 9/18, 9/19, and 9/20 UCSC Campus Transit Day Loop buses will operate from 8:00am to 5:40pm. Night shuttles (Upper Campus route) will operate from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. Students should choose these buses for on-campus travel. Paying a fare and showing a bus pass is not required to ride campus shuttle buses.
On Thursday, 9/19 there will be a shuttle from the East Remote parking lot to Stevenson College Circle every 20 minutes from 9:00am to 5:00pm.
On Friday, 9/20 there will be a shuttle from the East Remote parking lot to Cowell and Crown Colleges every 10 minutes from 9:00am to 5:20pm.
On Saturday 9/21 and Sunday 9/22 day shuttles (Upper Campus route) will operate from 8:00am to 6:00pm.
On Saturday 9/21 there will also be a shuttle from the East Remote parking lot to Crown Circle every 10 minutes from 8:45am to 5:00pm. Night Loop buses, and East and West Night Core buses, will also be operating. Night Owl service between campus and downtown Santa Cruz will operate on Saturday and Sunday night.
A Move In transit service schedule showing start and end times for each route is available for downloading.
For travel to off-campus destinations students can ride Santa Cruz Metro buses by showing their UCSC student ID card or a temporary Metro bus pass provided to new students by their college or housing unit (if the student hasn't obtained a student ID card).
Full school-term Metro and Campus Transit service will begin on Monday 9/23. At that time students should always try to select Campus Transit shuttle buses for on-campus travel, and limit use of Metro buses for times when they need to get to and from off-campus destinations (i.e. to go to downtown Santa Cruz or to shop off-campus).
Metro bus schedules are available at http://www.scmtd.com.
