COVID-19: Transportation & Parking FAQ's

Campus leaders are taking all appropriate measures to protect our community and closely following the guidance of our state and nation’s top health leaders to ensure we continue to support the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff. As it relates to transportation and parking, the following are FAQs in response to the current COVID-19 (coronavirus) situation. For additional campus-specific information, please click here.

What steps are being taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19?

In addition to increasing our standard cleaning efforts of vehicles, we are wiping down passenger and driver “high touch” areas with a sanitizing solution. Zipcar has also upgraded their car-cleaning with antiviral and antimicrobial solutions and have deployed incremental sanitizing procedures.

Will Campus Transit operations be affected?

Due to low ridership and other COVID-19 related issues, Campus Transit service levels will be affected and may change without notice.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, please keep the following in mind:

  • Avoid using Campus Transit if you are sick
  • Consider reducing your use of campus transit to essential trips only (doctor’s appointments, etc.)
  • While onboard a bus, to the greatest extent possible, please observe social spacing (at least 6’ between people)
  • Do not stand near the bus operator
  • Be courteous to other riders and the bus operator by following the CDC COVID-19 Prevention tips posted on the buses
  • Masks are required when waiting for or riding Campus and METRO transit

Will Santa Cruz METRO operations be affected?

On June 15th, Santa Cruz METRO began collecting fares again for county transit. METRO service levels continue to be reduced and they are limiting the number of riders allowed on buses. To view current schedules and restrictions, visit

Can I use my current bus pass or student ID to ride METRO buses?

Students currently enrolled in classes for the summer quarter may continue to ride METRO buses fare-free and county-wide past June 30. These students may board by presenting a Summer 2020 sticker on their student ID card. Additionally, in order to help decrease foot traffic at ID Services or the Summer Session Office, and until further notice, summer session students may also board with Winter 2020 or Spring 2020 stickers.

Faculty, Staff, or Graduate students with a summer appointment who wish to purchase a new Employee METRO Bus Pass may complete the online application. These new passes may be used to board and ride county-wide METRO buses effective immediately.


Do I need a permit to park on campus?

Beginning July 1, 2020, all parking on campus will require the display of an appropriate, valid permit or placard, or a virtual permit payment. If you are returning to work or classes during the summer months, you may apply for or renew a permit online. Current Multi-Year A Permits do not expire until the end of calendar year 2020, but you may choose to renew at this time as well.

If I have a Multi-year permit, but am continuing to work remotely, how do I stop my payroll deduction? 


Permits may be mailed to 1156 High Street, TAPS Sales Office, Santa Cruz, CA 95064, or dropped off touch-free at the TAPS Sales Office. 

I have scratch-off permits that expired 12/31/2020. Can I get a refund?

There are no refunds for scratch-off permits. However, due to the unexpected onset of COVID, scratch-off permits that expired 12/31/2020 may be eligible to exchange for permits with a later expiration date. Please email by January 29, 2021 for more details.

I am a first-or second-year residential student. Can I purchase a parking permit?

As an exception due to the COVID-19 pandemic, first- and second-year residential students will be eligible to purchase weekly, monthly and quarterly R Permits for summer 2020 and fall 2020 without an appeal. A decision for future quarters will be announced at a later date. Remember, inventory is limited and will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.


Will JUMP Bikes be available?

JUMP bikes have been discontinued in the coty of Santa Cruz. All bikes will be removed from the streets. Uber rides and Uber eats remain available. 

Can I ride my bike and walk on campus?

People are encouraged to ride their bikes and walk instead of using campus transit or public transportation. When biking or walking, make sure to maintain a social distance of at least 6 feet from others. 

Will there be any bike safety programming?

While all in-person bike safety programs have been suspended, TAPS is continuing to provide virtual bike safety classes and the Bike Library will also conduct safety classes in the Fall. Visit the Bike Events page for upcoming events.


Other Transportation

If I am in the Vanpool program, but do not need to come to campus during this time or if my Vanpool does not have a driver, what are my options?

Vanpool program participants may contact the TDM coordinator to discuss their options related to Vanpooling during this time.

Are ZipCars still available?

The campus currently has 12 Zipcars available for UCSC affiliates. Check the Aipcar app to confirm location and availability. Zipcar has increased cleaning and sanitization to ensure the safety of users during the COVID-19 pandemic. More information is available on Zipcar's website.
