Winter Quarter 2022 Permit Recommendations

January 11, 2022

With the extension of remote instruction for the remainder of January, 2022, you may be looking for guidance regarding your long-term parking permits and bus passes. During this period of uncertainty around remote and in-person learning, TAPS is recommending the following:

Employees with Payroll Deduction

At this time, if you are financially able, we recommend that you keep your permit if you anticipate parking on campus after January 31st. Due to permit pricing structures, cancelling your deductions at this time will have minimal cost savings.

Additionally, a cancellation may result in you needing to pay one month up-front if you wish to restart your deductions and have a valid permit beginning February 1st.

If you do not anticipate returning to campus during the winter quarter (or later), you may elect to cancel your deductions. Please note that you must return your permit (either in person or via mail) in order to stop your payroll deductions. Please follow the return instructions below.

Students and/or Employees with Prepaid Permits

Permit returns may cause delays in receiving refunds and reapplying for permits. If you are financially able, we recommend that you keep your permit until more information is available regarding a return to in-person instruction after January 31st.

Should you elect to return your permit, you may do so either in-person or via mail. To return your permit, please follow the return instructions below. You will receive a prorated refund for the time between the return date and the expiration of your permit. Please Note: If you decide to park on campus after returning your permit, you will need to reapply and obtain a new permit or use ParkMobile spaces. There is currently a waitlist for undergrad permits; any undergrads who cancel their permits will not have priority for reinstating their permits.

Employees with Bus Passes

METRO has not suspended fares at this time, so we do not recommend returning your bus passes as you may continue to use them to ride METRO buses throughout Santa Cruz County.

Returning Your Permit

If you are electing to return your permit for a prorated refund or to stop your payroll deductions, you may return your permit to the TAPS Sales Office, or mail* it to:

TAPS Sales Office
1156 High Street
Santa Cruz, CA 95064

*TAPS assumes no liability for permits lost in the mail. We encourage affiliates to return permits in person whenever possible.

If you choose to mail your permit, please send a follow-up email to tapssales@ucsc.edu. The date of this email will be used to calculate your proration or deduction end date as long as the postmark is within two (2) business days (i.e., if the postmark is greater than two (2) business days past the email, the postmark will be used as the proration / deduction end-date)

This is a dynamic situation and we understand that circumstances may change between now and February 1st. It is important to note that this is not a Shelter in Place order, nor a campus closure. Many staff, faculty, and students are continuing to work or live on campus. At this time, permit requirements are continuing to be enforced, so TAPS will follow existing protocols as closely as possible to ensure equity for those who are still utilizing our programs. We appreciate your patience and understanding while we continue to navigate these unique circumstances.

If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to us at tapssales@ucsc.edu.
