The Great Meadow Bike Path is now open after being closed for renovations over the summer.

The new upgraded path includes reconstructed pavement, a wider path to allow for safer bike travel, and a multi-use trail to accommodate both pedestrian (two-way) and bike traffic on the uphill portion of the path. These improvements to the bike path were a campus priority to reduce the number of bicycle-related accidents and injuries and improve the path’s functionality.

These improvements to the bike path were possible due to generous grants totaling $1,134,000, including $700,000 from the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission and $434,000 from the California Transportation Commission Active Transportation Program (ATP). This is the second phase of bike path upgrades with the first phase being completed in 2016.

In the coming week, TAPS will be kicking off a contest to commemorate this occasion so stay tuned to TAPS social media and website, and start thinking about your stories about biking on campus. Happy cycling, Slugs!
