Parking Permit Requirement and Renewal/Application Update

Beginning July 1, 2020, all parking on campus will require the display of an appropriate, valid permit or placard, or a virtual permit payment. If you are returning to work or classes during the summer months, you may apply for or renew a permit online. Current Multi-Year A Permits do not expire until the end of calendar year 2020, but you may choose to renew at this time as well.   


Parking Permit Applications:
Faculty, Staff and Grad Students

Annual parking permits expire on June 30, 2020. UCSC employees or graduate students who need to re-apply for their 2020-21 parking permit can apply online now. If you apply online after June 21st, your permit will be automatically held in the TAPS Sales Office for pick-up unless you specify in the application comments that you would like to have it mailed to an off-campus address via US Mail (which is strongly encouraged). Please wait to pick up your permit at the TAPS Sales Office until you receive a follow-up email with further instructions. Contact the TAPS Sales Office with any additional questions regarding permit applications and pick-ups.

If you have already applied for your 2020-21 parking permit, there is no need to reapply.

Important information for multi-year parking permit holders.

***IMPORTANT ACTION REQUIRED FOR 
MULTI-YEAR, PAYROLL DEDUCTED PERMITS***


**If your Multi-Year permit is paid for via payroll deduction, your deductions will resume regardless of your need to park (or not) on campus.** Payroll deductions will resume once all credits have been applied. Due to the credit/debit system for refunds, employees who are paid monthly will see their first permit charge on the paycheck dated September 1st, and employees who are paid biweekly will see their first charge on the paycheck dated August 5th.

If you will be returning to campus and need parking, you may use your valid, unexpired permit. You may renew online in advance if you choose to do so (you will need to return your current permit in order to receive a new one).

**If you are continuing to work remotely, or if you will not be returning to campus in the near future and DO NOT need or want parking, you must notify TAPS that you would like to stop your payroll deductions and return your permit prior to July 15, 2020.

YOU MUST OPT OUT AND RETURN YOUR VALID MULTI-YEAR PERMIT IF YOU NO LONGER REQUIRE OR DESIRE A PARKING PERMIT.

Permits may be mailed to 1156 High Street, TAPS Sales Office, Santa Cruz, CA 95064, or dropped off touch-free at the TAPS Sales Office. 

 


Permit Applications:
Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students who are eligible for parking may apply for their 2020-21 permit online now. All eligible students who are interested in purchasing parking should apply, regardless of payment method. Permits will be charged to your student bill unless you indicate "payment by credit card" in the comment section of the application. If you indicate that you want to pay by credit card, TAPS staff will contact you when the credit card payment option opens in August.


TAPS Sales Office

TAPS strongly encourages everyone to renew their permits online and elect to receive them via US Mail at an off-campus address in order to maintain distancing and minimize in-person contact in the TAPS Sales Office. Appointments and questions should be conducted over the phone or via Zoom when possible. 

You may schedule an in-person or Zoom appointment by calling the TAPS Sales office at (831) 459-4543 or (831) 502-7942. If permits must be picked up in person, TAPS will offer a curbside/vehicle pick-up option. Please expect delays.

If you are unwell or experiencing any symptoms, do not come to the TAPS Sales Office in person.

Before coming to the TAPS Sales Office in person, please call (831) 459-4543 or (831) 502-7942 to determine whether you need to schedule an appointment. For transactions that MUST be conducted in person, the TAPS Sales Office will reopen for the public beginning July 1st with the following distancing protocols in place:

  • Only two customers will be allowed inside the TAPS Sales Office at one time.
  • The line outside the office will include markers for 6 ft. separation
  • Pre-scheduled appointments will occur in a TAPS Office located in the Central Garage Building. 
  • Masks or fabric face coverings will be required when inside buildings or when interacting with people at a distance closer than 6 feet (including in-vehicle permit pick-up and other transactions conducted outside the TAPS Sales Office).
  • Increased cleaning and sanitization of high-touch areas
  • Addition of plexiglass barriers at sales windows
  • No cash or check payments. Only credit card, payroll deduction and student account payments will be accepted.

No Walk-In Temporary Permit Sales

All in-person temporary permit sales (i.e. daily, weekly, monthly) will continue to be suspended in order to reduce foot traffic in our Permit Sales Office. Temporary permits may be purchased online and mailed to the recipient, or short-term parking may be paid for in spaces designated for ParkMobile or pay station payments.

ParkMobile

For the summer quarter, daily parking options will be available in additional locations via ParkMobile, and parking rates will mirror those for "paper” daily permits. Previously existing ParkMobile locations will remain unchanged at this time; ParkMobile transaction fees will apply.

A limited number of additional ParkMobile spaces for daily parking will be designated by signage on campus and viewable on the ParkMobile app in the following locations:

Lot 104 - East Remote

Daily A Permits
Lots 111A, 119, 138, 150B, and 162


Alternative Transportation/METRO

Students currently enrolled in classes for the summer quarter may continue to ride METRO buses fare-free and county-wide past June 30. These students may board by presenting a Summer 2020 sticker on their student ID card.  Additionally, in order to help decrease foot traffic at ID Services or the Summer Session Office, and until further notice, summer session students may also board with Winter 2020 or Spring 2020 stickers.

Faculty and Staff, or Graduate students with a summer appointment, who wish to purchase a new Employee METRO Bus Pass may do so now by completing the application located here.  These new passes may be used to board and ride county-wide METRO buses effective immediately.

Additionally, 2019-2020 Employee METRO Bus Passes will be accepted through July 15 in order to give everyone ample time to procure a 2020-2021 pass.

Employee METRO Bus Passes are not available via walk-in sale. You may apply online and elect to have your pass mailed, or arrange for a curbside/in-vehicle pick-up.

Using alternative transportation reduces parking impact and helps keep our campus sustainable:

  • Riding a bike is one of the safest ways to get to campus while maintaining  distance. TAPS maintains several programs to help cyclists, from riding workshops to zero-interest loans to purchase e-bikes for faculty and staff. Check out our Bike Programs page for more information.

  • Want to carpool, but don't have anyone to carpool with? Sign up for UCSC's Zimride system using your campus email address to find other UCSC affiliates making the same commute you are. You can find tips for safe carpooling during COVID-19 on our website.

  • Join a UCSC Vanpool. UCSC Vanpools serve home locations from San Jose to Monterey and the Vanpool Program monthly fares are significantly less than the cost of driving a car to UCSC alone each day. Contact the TDM Coordinator to find out if there is an available van near you.
